A new movement is sweeping the nation. Thousands of regular people are growing weed from the comfort of their own homes. Here’s how you can join them.

With Marijuana decriminalization and legalization taking hold in the United States, a whole crop of growers are taking to the garden to cultivate their own bud. Bygone are the days of relying on dealers and corporate dispensaries. Yet, for many interested in the prospect, growing for the first time presents itself as a daunting task. With that in mind, here’s the most straight-forward, simplistic way to get down to cultivating your very own marijuana plants.

1. Select Your Location

The first thing you’ll want to think about is where you’ll be growing. It may sound simple, but deciding between an indoor and outdoor will greatly affect how you proceed. If it’s your first time, we recommend an indoor setup so you can have total control over sunlight, temperature, and other environmental factors. In terms of where you go inside, just make sure you have easy access to fresh air. That means a garage, grow tent, or spot with patio access will be advantageous.

2. Select Your Light Source

Next you’ll want to decide upon your light source. There’s always the time-tested source of all life on Earth, the Sun. If you choose sunshine, make sure plants get at least 8 hours of light a day. Other options include Compact Flourescent Light Bulbs (CFLs) and household LEDs. If youre looking for top of the line gear, you’ll want to splurge on LED Grow Lights, which are designed to foster cultivation.

3. Acquire Your Soil

Though modern growing techniques include soilless mixes and hydroponics, the easiest, most time-tested way to grow great bud is soil. The best thing to do is acquire Super Soil, which you can learn about right here.

4. Acquire Your Seeds

The way to proceed next is dependent on who you know. If you happen to have friends or acquaintances who also grow, acquiring seeds should be a sitch. However, if you dont know anyone who has them, most local dispensaries will be willing to sell you clones of theirs. If youre unsure whether you want to go with seeds or clones, here’s an article that may help. Clones are a great option for novices as they mean youll be working with a trusted strain. However, if you want to start with your own seeds, here is a link to popular vendors.

5. Germinate Your Seeds

Next, you’ll need to germinate your seeds. There are a number of ways to do this– but we think the easiest is to use a Rapid Rooter.

6. Cultivate to the Vegetative Stage

This is it. You’ve done all the necessary preparation and you’re officially growing cannabis. Ideally, you want to be in an environment between 72 - 80 degrees Fahrenheit, but as long the weather isnt extreme they should flourish. Right now, your focus should be purely on growing your plants to be healthy and strong. Give the plants 18 hours of light a day and water every or every other day, dependent on growth.

7. Monitor the Flowering Stage

You’ve done it. Dank buds are starting to form from your plants. Now, youve entered the blooming stage. Switch to a 12 hour light schedule, identify whether your plant is male or female, and get rid of the males. An easy way to identify plants gender is the females will have wispy white hairs on the top joints. At this point, slightly cooler temperatures are best. 65-80 degrees is ideal.

8. Work the Harvesting Stage

Every new grower wants to know when to harvest. The way to tell is that your buds have stopped growing white hair and has actually darkened in color. When 50% of plants have hit that darkest color, youre ready to go, as this means theyve reached their most potent THC level. From here, it couldnt be easier. Just cut the plant down with scissors in the way that makes most sense for you to get your nugs.

9. Trim & Cure The Nugs

After letting your nuggets dry, you’ll put them in tightly closed, quart-sized mason jars. Once a day for 2 weeks, open the jars for just a few seconds for fresh air, then seal them back up. After this, youll open the jars only once a week for a few seconds. Repeat for about 6 months. Now, your weed is ready to be smoked.

10. Spark It Up

You’ve done it! The road was long and fulfilling, but here you are with a batch of your very own weed! Smokem if you gottem friends.
